28 golfers played in the Marshall Hall Cup held at Gog Magog on Friday 24th July. The weather was fine to start with, although heavy rain was forecast, and duly arrived, making scoring difficult. Given the conditions, David Lynas' winning score of 38 points off a handicap of 9 was particularly impressive. Bill Blyth was runner up with 34 points, while Roger Palin won the Posnett Salver with 108. Duncan Moore won the nearest to the pin on the 17th and Nigel Snaith had the longest drive on the 18th.
The rain became heavier as the day went on, to the extent that the rainfall in East Anglia on the Friday almost exceeded the average for the month of July. Given the conditions, only 6 pairs ventured out in the afternoon. Winner was Mike Frisby and Stephen Munday with 13 points with Don Cave and John Parker runners-up on 12. Mike Frisby was awarded the tile for being a reluctant afternoon participant - who of course went on win the event.
The golfers were honoured by the presence of the Johnian Society Chairman, Graham Spooner for dinner on Thursday evening and the President, Colin Greenhalgh on Friday. As many of the golfers returned to college early due to the inclement weather, it was decided to break with tradition and present the trophies after dinner in the Wordsworth Room. The trophies were presented by Colin Greenhalgh, and it was generally agreed that presenting the trophies after dinner was a success that we should consider repeating in future years.
