Honoring Heschel at 100-An International Conference

Arguably no Jewish theologian over the past century has done more to rehabilitate and reiterate the Biblical prophetic voice than Abraham Joshua Heschel. Through his extensive writings as well as through his own personal example, Rabbi Heschel embodied a Jewish witness to the world, calling Jews and all people of good will to a just, peaceful, and faith-filled life. On this, the hundredth anniversary of his birth, we seek to honor Rabbi Heschel by tuning our ears to the prophetic voice he embodied, one that the world needs to hear more than ever. A reconsideration of Rabbi Heschel’s voicing of the prophetic will help to retrain our ears so that we can carry that message forward into the 21st century.

Susannah Heschel and I would like to invite you to celebrate her father’s life and to add your voice to his legacy. To do this we are inviting you to join us at an International Conference November 1-3, 2007 at the Center for Jewish Studies here at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. We are asking for essays relating to Rabbi Heschel’s life and work, as well as your own contributions to issues related to religion, justice, civil rights, feminism-- in short, issues of importance for our common future.

Papers will be standard 20 minute presentations in length. Please submit a 150 word abstract to: Jewish_Studies@Baylor.edu.
