Artifact: Photograph of students participating in a graffiti write
Reflection: I use formative assessments consistently within my lessons. These can be as easily implemented as having students give me a thumbs up or down to indicate how well they are understanding the material. At times they are also more formal check-ins that allow me to gauge progress toward very specific targets. In the example I've selected here, students participated in a graffiti write at the close of the lesson. Questions posed on the papers spread around the room gave me a way to check the understanding of the whole class in an engaging, student-centered way. Students who were unsure of an answer had the opportunity to read the responses of their peers, thus getting a bit of reteaching on the spot. To further advance learning, I read responses to the questions out loud to students immediately following this activity. This gave students feedback on their responses in an authentic way.
