Behavior Chart: One way that I have worked to create an environment of mutual respect, rapport, and fairness is by having set classroom management routines implemented within my classroom. From the beginning of the year I make my expectations clear to students so that our classroom culture takes root in an environment where we all have a mutual understanding. One tool students have gotten familiar with within my room is our color-coded behavior chart. This is a visible way for students to monitor their own behaviors while also encouraging and celebrating the behaviors of others. I have attached a picture of this colored chart taken while it was in use during a typical day in the classroom. This tool promotes respect among students and is fair for each of them because movement is not dependent on anything except the choices they are making.
Photo of Students:The second artifact uploaded below is an image of three of my students working collaboratively. This image shows that these students are able to work together respectfully because of the environment I have created in the classroom. In addition, the activity the students are working on was used at the beginning of the year to introduce my expectations and collaboratively set norms for group work within the classroom. Students first put a puzzle together that was missing a piece to signify the effects of one group member who is not working toward the group's goals. They then were given the task of coloring the puzzle but each student was only allowed to use the one marker they had been given - this helped students learn to communicate with and trust one another in order to accomplish their goals. These ideas have permeated every other activity my students have worked on, continually developing that positive environment
