For this activity you will need:
- some coin purse templates. To download a PDF document of two sheets of purse templates (one of blanks and one a mixture of blank and patterned), 6 purses on each sheet, as well as a colourful instruction page (which can be printed out and laminated and left with the kids if they are old enough to get on with the activity by themselves), then please CLICK HERE (where you will be able to see the whole document first and then choose to download it if you wish to). Alternatively you can draw and design your own purse shapes. Everyone will need two templates for each purse - one for the 'back' and one for the 'front'.
- depending on how you want to decorate your purses you will need: either felt tip pens or pencils (for colouring in/designing) OR glue and tissue paper or various coloured and patterned paper (old wrapping paper is always good!)
- coloured card (again enough to provide two purse shapes per child)
- round gold and/or silver sequins (large enough to be 'coins') or else some gold or silver card or paper (if there are a lot of children, lots of young ones or not many scissors to go round, then preparing lots of pre-cut circles might be a good idea!).
- scissors and glue
Instructions:
1. Cut out your purse shapes from the printed sheet. You will need two - a front and a back. Colour them in, draw a picture on them or else use tissue paper or patterned & coloured paper to make a patchwork collage 'fabric'.
2. Glue your 'front' and 'back' onto coloured card and carefully cut round the purse shapes. The coloured card will look like the lining inside your coin purse. [If you find it easier, you can glue your purse onto the card before you decorate it/colour it in - it does not really matter which way round you do it]
3. Use gold and silver round sequins, or gold and silver card circles as coins and glue them to the inside TOP half of your purses.
4. Glue the BOTTOM half of your purses together. If you want you could even fold them in half backwards to make it easier to 'open' them so you can see the coins inside.
Here are some pictures of ones other children have made, masha'Allah tabarak Allah. They came up with lots of creative ideas to make each purse unique: such as leaving the coins loose and drawing the amounts on each coin or using real coins to 'rub' an embossed image onto gold card, or else drawing zips, pockets and objects (such as mobile phones) inside the purses!
