Before heading to dormitory from airport
A typical dormitory is designed for convenient access to classrooms rather than for convenient access from the outside of the campus. It is very easy to reach a neighborhood of Hanyang University campus, but will take some work to reach the dormitory after you arrive in the neighborhood of the campus.
Hanyang University dormitory offers basic accommodation. Female students will be assigned to a different building from the rest of the students, which offers a better security. Each student is expected to occupy a single room, which is designed for two students. Each room has a wired internet connection, and a (window) air conditioning unit. Male students have to share a bath room and a laundry facility in each floor, while each room in the dormitory for female students is equipped with a small bath room. At the time of check-in, each student has to pick up a clean set of bed sheet and pillow. There is no linen service or cleaning service during the summer school.
Checklist. Please go over the following items before you decide to use this instruction to reach your destination.
Cash. With a high probability, you can manage only with a credit card, but it would be a good idea to have some local currency, say around KW30,000, which is about 30 US Dollars. There are a couple of banks in the custom area at the airport.
Bags. You should be able to move around with your bags for a short distance by yourself without a cart. At one point between the airport and the dormitory, you may have to walk a short distance, say one hundred meters, over a paved road.
Emergency contacts. It is highly recommended to bring your cell phone with you, and to have it activated to work in Korea so that you can at least make an emergency call or send text messages. You can find a few service booths operated by the major local service providers at the airport. Please keep handy the emergency number of a student helper, who will be on stand-by mode throughout the day (say, until midnight) when many of you check in the dorm.
T money card. (optional) If you think you may use some form of public transportation such as subway or bus while you are in Seoul, it is highly recommended to purchase a T money card at a convenient store at the airport at a modest fee, and have it charged KW20,000, which will be sufficient for you to travel from the airport to the dormitory by buses (not taxi). Most convenient store where you can buy the card can have the card charged for any amount you are willing to pay.
If your travel plan does not meet these conditions, or if your arrival time at Incheon Airport (ICN) is "odd" (between 10:00PM and 6:00AM), you may need to contact the local organizer for further information a few weeks before your arrival, explaining the specific issues you have.
