Membership.
Because the summer school is an official program of the Econometric Society (ES), you must be a member at the time of the application. To join the Society, check the Econometric Society homepage.
The application site asks whether you are a member.
If you declare that you are a member of ES without a valid membership at the time of application, your application could be summarily denied.
Reliable contact information.
E-mail is the primary mode of communication. Reliable e-mail addresses of the applicant and the reference are the most important. (See the last bullet point, "After applying," to understand why we emphasize reliability.)
Use the same contact information and the identical spelling of your name as the membership information of the Econometric Society when you apply for the summer school, if possible. The Econometric Society checks the membership status of all applicants. A minor discrepancy in personal information might trigger the membership checking program to mark you as a "non-member."
Paper.
If you do not have or do not want to present a paper, skip this part by clicking "no." Slightly less than one-quarter of applicants for the summer school did not have, or chose not to present, a paper.
If you have a presentable paper, you need some preparation.
You will be asked to provide the URL link to the paper in PDF format instead of uploading a file.
The PDF file should be free of password protection so that we can download the paper without prompting you for permission. Otherwise, your paper might not be evaluated on time.
After you provide us with a stable link for the paper, you can continue to revise the file yourself, as long as you keep the same URL address.
You are expected to present the (updated version of the) same paper you submitted at the time of application. In the past, some students requested to present a new paper, which we had not had a chance to look into. Such a request is usually denied.
Letter of recommendation.
You need someone who can write a letter of recommendation for you. You will be asked to fill out the email address of your reference.
Apply.
After you click "submit," you cannot change your application. If you realize that you have made serious mistakes, do not upload multiple applications in a panic. Please e-mail the organizer, In-Koo Cho, with the subject line "esSummer: application" and a brief description of the problem.
After applying (Very important).
When you click "submit," the application site immediately confirms the application is filed and sends an email request for the recommendation letter to the reference. The email request contains an active hyperlink to help your reference securely upload the letter to the application database.
A mail server often tags as a SPAM a machine-generated message with an active hyperlink. You may find the message in your Junk or SPAM Mail folder. Even worse, the message may disappear into cyberspace without any trace. We have experienced that around 15 percent of messages going out of the application site have failed to reach the intended receiver directly. The trend is expected to continue as the system administrators tighten the security.
Be sure to check with your reference whether he/she has received the request for the letter from us. If you do not receive a confirmation from the application site, or if your reference has not received the request for the letter within 24 hours since your submission of the application, please send an e-mail to the organizer, In-Koo Cho, with the subject line "esSummer: application" along with a brief description of the problem.
