Stanley Spokeshaves.

For this article we decided to concentrate on two types, the No 66 beader and No 60 double spokeshave.

A cabinet maker for 55 years, now retired and HTPSWA member, Gerry has a passion for spokeshaves and researches them meticulously. Gerry's display is in a carpeted room with beautiful cabinets, all catalogued and definitely no "rust" on display.

Gerry told me before he starts sourcing a collection, he does a complete case study on each type individually. He says a lot of initial information comes from Lamonds book on spokeshaves and Walters book on Stanley tools, though only to a certain point as a lot of types aren't touched on.

Gerry likes the tools in his collection to be in a similar condition to that which the tradesman would have purchased them, so he restores them completely to as new.

Following is an abbreviated version of two of his case studies.

No 66 Stanley Beader.

Initially there was a prototype made (Gerry's still looking for one of these) designed in 1885 by S W Hall and according to Lamond was 15 1/2" long. The No 66 came with two fences, one straight and the other curved, and also came with seven cutters, an extra blank cutter was added in 1909. Just for interest the No 69 hand beader came with the same cutters.
