Below is a basic schedule to help Grolier curators estimate, with their book designers, the timeline from final proofed manuscript to delivery of bound books. This generic schedule is based on printing overseas (rather than in the United States) for cost reasons. All time estimates are approximate.
We recommend having a draft manuscript prepared no later than nine months prior to your exhibition opening to begin copy editing and text setting.
Book Design 4 weeks
Typesetting and layouts (designer) 3 weeks (for a large book with many photos)
Proofread layout (curator) 2 weeks
Revise layout (designer) 1 week
Final proofread (curator) 1 week
Prepress & proofs (designer) 3 weeks
Final corrections (curator and designer) 2 weeks
Print and bind 5 weeks
Shipping & customs (printer) 10 weeks (deduct 7 weeks if your book is printed in the United States)
Total Production and Shipping Schedule: 31 weeks
