The Members’ Exhibitions program is intended to acquaint the Grolier Club membership and general public with the collections of our members.
Organizing and installing an exhibition at the Grolier Club is a complex task that requires the time, talent, and efforts of many people: the curator, lenders to the exhibition, printers, designers, art preparators, and the Grolier Club staff. Upon acceptance of your proposal, we will host a launch meeting with the Curator(s), Chair of Members Exhibition Committee, Director of Exhibitions, Publications Manager, and Chair of the Publications Committee to introduce each of our staff members, establish clear communication channels, and explain how we will guide the exhibition and publication development process. We will touch base with you periodically as we approach your exhibition period to offer resources and guidance.
In anticipation of your exhibition, the subpages that follow include a variety of planning resources, organized in relative order of expected deadlines. These guidelines include how to propose an exhibition, detailed case diagrams with exact dimensions, overall room and case views, and a variety of sample label copy. We will provide a customized timeline for your exhibition, and you can see a template version in the Timelines page.
Plan on exhibiting 50-60 books from your collection, depending upon size, in the cases in the Rare Book Room and 10-20 flat or framed items in the wall cases in the hallway. Curators wishing to exhibit large numbers of prints or other framed materials should consult with us about display options. You may find it helpful to consult our Flickr page for examples of exhibitions that have been mounted in the past few years. It will give you a sense of the number of items the cases can accommodate as well as possibilities for their display.
As we get closer to the exhibition opening, be in touch with our Programs Manager to coordinate dates for programming associated with the exhibition, including Exhibition Tours, a Virtual Tour and Curator Q&A, and any other events you may decide to plan, such as lectures or receptions.
Please note: all press contacts should be coordinated with the Club's PR Consultant, Amanda Domizio (amanda@domiziopr.com).
I look forward to working with you, and if there is any topic that I can clarify or any task at all that I can help with, please do reach out (sbuchsbaum@grolierclub.org).
With kind regards,
Shira Buchsbaum
