Lutheranism
Holy Baptism
· Instituted by Christ
· Forgives sins, unites with Christ’s death and resurrection, clothes person with Christ, regenerates person, gives the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38-40; Galatians 3:27-29; Titus 3:5)
· God baptizes person. God comes to the sinner.
· Children are to be baptized that they too might receive forgiveness of sins.
· Baptism is necessary for Salvation (John 3:5; Mark 16:16)
· Baptism brings certainty of salvation to the heart of the believer because God is doing the work.
UMC
Holy Baptism
· Instituted by Christ
· Baptism is a sign of God’s grace towards man, but not a means of grace. It does not communicate forgiveness of sins.
· Children may be baptized
Baptism is important within Methodism but it is not necessary for salvation. Religious experience is seen as being more certain of God’s grace than baptism.
