Lutheranism
Use of Creeds
· Lutheranism has always held to the historic creeds of the ancient Church: the Apostle’s Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed. This tradition is carried on by Lutherans in the Book of Concord.
· The use of Creeds bring the comforting reality of the continuity of the Historical Christian Church. They confess our catholicity. They confess what the Church has always taught.
· Creeds are necessary because the history of Christian doctrine gives ample evidence that there is in man an inherent tendency to mistake his own preconceived notions for the voice of God.
· The denial of the use or value of a creed essentially becomes a creed. Not to mention that Baptists do have other creeds. (The New Hampshire Confession of 1833)
SBC
Use of Creeds
· Because of their theological emphasis of the liberty, or freedom, of the soul, Baptists will not confess any historical creed. Creeds are seen as an intrusion of another’s theology upon man’s individual freedom to construct his own creed. Man is free to approach God with out the aid of any intermediary, whether it be another man, church body etc.
· Spiritual Truth is addressed immediately to the individual soul and demonstrated to it directly by the Spirit. They cite Hebrews 8:10
Baptist’s “statements of belief” may be changed at any point in history.
