Lutheranism
Holy Matrimony
· Marriage was instituted by God. Therefore God is the one who joins man and wife.
· Marriage is seen as a visible sign of our Lord’s relationship with His bride, the Church. (Eph. 5:22-32)
· It is the relationship between Christ and His Church that is a mystery, not that of man and wife.
Divorce is allowed for the biblical reasons of: 1) adultery, or 2) abandonment. However Christians are not to be unequally yoked and are strongly encouraged not to marry an unbeliever.
Eastern Orthodoxy
Holy Matrimony
· Marriage was instituted by God. Therefore God is the one who joins man and wife.
· Since marriage is not a legal contract, vows are not exchanged in an Orthodox wedding ceremony.
· Marriage is seen as a sacrament because St. Paul uses this term in Ephesians 5 in relation to Christ and His bride.
Divorce is allowed for the biblical reasons of: 1) adultery, 2) abandonment, 3) unequally yoked (one is an unbeliever).
