6 July Paddington, Brisbane Leader: Des D
15 walkers went on this city exploration, catching the 7.40 train to Roma Street Station. After coffee at one of the cafes in The Barracks, Petrie Terrace, we began our walk around Paddington. First up was the Christ Church Milton Memorial Garden containing a few of the headstones from the former Paddington cemetery on the Suncorp Stadium site. They include that of the well-known citizen Patrick Mayne and many others who died young. Then the real undulations began, up Latrobe Terrace and some steep surrounding streets, with a quick detour into the treasure trove that is the huge Paddington Antiques shop. Finally, "up" became "down" as we headed down to the Paddo Tavern for lunch, then walked back to Roma Street for the return train.
13 July Kokoda Challenge Track Marking Leader: Ellen B
From Elsie Laver Park at Mudgeeraba 14 bushies drove along to the Hinterland Park on Hardy's Road. 7 did the longer walk further away, while the other 7 of us did a car shuffle via Austinville Rd and Glenmore Rd to Bromfield St. From here we positioned the direction stakes and marker ribbons ready for the Kokoda Challenge the following weekend. This track led us round to the cars parked at Austinville Rd and a return to the Hinterland Park for lunch. Ellen co-ordinated all this with great skill & good humour, and also gave much extra time, with Geoff Hamilton's help, to returning two dogs to their owners after the playful beasties insisted on accompanying us all the way.
20 July Daves Creek Leader: Peggy M
Peggy led 15 bushies on an anti-clockwise walk on the Daves Creek track at Binna Burra. From the top carpark they took the border track and turned left down the hill to the junction where this track starts - fortunately the weather has been kind, so there was a minimum of slippery sections. Morning tea was enjoyed at the dramatic outlook of Numinbah Lookout, and the group passed Surprise Rock on the return part as they went back up to the carpark area for lunch.
27 July Riverside Brisbane: Southbank to Story Bridge and Back Leader: Rosie S
Another day for 15 walkers to catch the 7.40 train, this time to Southbank. From here we walked down-river beside the Kangaroo Point cliffs, with morning tea at the nearby Riverside cafe. We continued on to Dockside and crossed the Story Bridge (now busy with climbers up top) to go around to the Eagle St precinct for lunch. The return walk took us through the city Botanic Gardens and across the Goodwill Bridge for the return train trip. Altogether it made for a great 10 km walk.
