3 Feb Tallebudgera Greenspace Leader: Peggy M
With the weather being uncertain, 24 of us did a local walk. From the carpark at the northern end of the Gold Coast Highway over Tallebudgera Creek we crossed to the southern side to go westward along to the pedestrian bridge across to Martin Sheil Park. We briefly circled back along the road to the David Fleay Wildlife Park for coffee at their cafe, then continued back to our starting point via the enjoyable boardwalk beside the creek and a few streets in the Koala Park corner of Burleigh. Lunch on this hot day was at the north side picnic tables near the bridge.
10 Feb Beach & Parks - Broadbeach/Surfers Leader: Peggy M
27 bushies did the coastal walk from Kurrawa Surf Club northwards beside the beach up to Surfers Paradise for morning tea. Most of the group then did the return walk by crossing to the Cascade Gardens to see the impressive Kokoda memorial before returning to lunch & the cars at Kurrawa.
17 Feb Tweed Regional Gallery Walk Leader: Dorothy L
From Mudgeeraba 23 members drove to re-group at Budd Park near the main Murwillumbah bridge. We then walked southwards along River St near the flood levee bank and briefly along the Tweed Valley Way at Greenhills to go up the hill to the Gallery in Mistral St. Some of us had morning tea next, before the late-morning rush. Then we dived into this treasure-house of interesting artworks, with a selection of the Archibald Prize entries, including the winner, on display until the end of February. We were fortunate to catch another lovely exhibition, aptly named 'Luscious', of magnificent still-life paintings by Mullumbimby artist Gatya Kelly, the Artist in Residence. I've never seen cherries, pomegranate seeds, figs and magnolias looking so gorgeous. We also saw an excellent display of photographs by NSW Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, and revisited the Margaret Olley rooms. Just as the gallery and cafe were filling to overflowing with school students and afternoon visitors we were glad to return, via our original route or along the Tweed Valley Way as far as the Railway Station. While we were lunching at Budd Park, the local press photographer wandered our way (maybe it was the noise we were making), and the five resulting photos appeared in the Tweed Daily News on Sat 20 Feb.
24 Feb Surfers' Sand Sculptures Leader: Josie B
Another 'culture vulture' morning, as 19 bushies met at the Marina Mirage carpark to walk south through Narrow neck to Surfers Paradise. Here the beachfront walkway was the scene of a top notch collection of Disney 'animal fantasy' sand sculptures - what magnificent big teeth and cheeky eyes some of them had! After morning tea at the nearby coffee shops we returned to the cars, after enough walking for a hot morning.
