Four walkers, including our leader, drove to the Numinbah Valley, spectacular in the early morning light. We parked the cars a 40 metres or so from Stafford Road and crossed the main Nerang Road to enter the bush and follow the clearly marked Great Walk up to Egg Rock.
Climbing steadily up the ridge through the shady bush we were soon looking down on the Correction Centre to the north. Loud speaker noises floated up the Valley to reach our observation point.
Before reaching the ridge top we crossed three well constructed and convenient styles. The climb up the ridge and the descent on the other side was made easier by sets of small concrete steps along the way. The track was clear and easy to follow with only one segment being cut by a fallen tree. At many places lantana grew in thick confusion.
The descent on the western side found us at the shady, rocky Egg Rock Creek, home to 1000’s of contented frogs, judging by their loud croaks. Crossing the Creek found a junction in the track. The left track led to the steep ascent up the escarpment to Bina Burra - the right track led us to our morning tea spot at the side of the creek. We were at the bottom of the towering Egg Rock and its warning not to offend the spirits by climbing it.
To return, we retraced our steps over the ridge and down the other side to the cars. Lunch was had at an attractive shady picnic spot a few kilometres through Numinbah on the Nerang side.
A very leisurely, cool walk on a hot day. Overall distance covered, say a generous 10 km. Great walk Leader.
