Joseph Edward Tapole, Jr. 6/7/1939 - 7/22/1957 An 18-year-old Greensburg athlete drowned yesterday afternoon at Kingston Dam on the Loyalhanna Creek along Route 30 east of Greensburg. He was Joseph Edward Tapole, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Tapole, Sr. or read 409 Westminster Avenue. The youth was swimming with his brother Jimmy, 13 years old, and an uncle John Steve, of Lincoln Avenue, when he found himself in trouble in deep water. Attempts by Latrobe firemen and thers to revive the local boy failed, according to Coroner, Stephen D. Yoney. The parents of the drowned youth told the Tribune-Review last night that Joe went swimming with his brother and uncle shortly after noon. It is believed that Je was stricken with a cramp, Mrs. Tapole said.

She added that just before he left home he had eaten two hot dogs. “I told him not to eat before he went swimming,” Mrs. Tapole learfully told a reporter. Joe left home reminding his mother not to forget to get his bath ready when he got back so he would not be late to play Prep League baseball last night at Lynch Field. He was a pitcher and utility infielder for the Indians.

His uncle was in the water at the time Joe went under and “hollered for help.” Steve told the parents that he tried to assist the floundering boy, but he grabbed him (Steve) around the neck and pulled him under.

The body was pulled to shore by three unidentified swimmers, and artificial respiration was administered, but to no avail. Latrobe firemen under the direction of Fire Chief R. P. Wible arrived on the scene and also gave first aid. Joseph was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. John Hamill of the Latrobe Hospital staff.

It was reported that the boy was able to swim well since he was a Sports enthusiast. Besides baseball and basketball, his favorite sport was weight-lifting which he practiced in the basement of his home. He would have started his junior year at Greensburg High School next fall.

Joe was a native of Greensburg. He was born on June 7, 1939. Besides his parents he is survived by one brother and three sisters: James Stephen at home; Mrs. Mary Schnupp, of Miami Fla., and Nancy Jean and Barbara Ann, both at home. Friends will be received at Cramer's, North Main Street. Requiem High Mass will be held at 10:30 o'clock Friday morning. Internment will be made in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.
