NASA’s Human Mission to Mars, for exploration & eventual settlement, is slated to 1ˢᵗ arrive on the Red Planet in the 2030’s. National Geographic’s 6-part series “Mars”, from Director Ron Howard, envisions the actual mission, visualizing potential mission strategies combining NASA tech with that from independent Space Industries such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

“Journey To Space”: An earlier NASA visualization of the Mars human mission focusing on utilizing mostly next-generation NASA tech, primarily the Space Launch System (SLS), which replaces Shuttle boosters & Apollo-era Saturn 5 moon rocket, & Orion Spacecraft, which replaces Shuttle & Apollo-era Apollo spacecraft). Narrated by Star Trek's The Next Generation Captain Sir Patrick Stewart & originally shown in IMAX 3D, it's now available on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD & 4K UHD + 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray 2-disc combo. While most of the film chronicles mission component core tech development, the final ~15 minutes bring it all together with hi-res computer graphic visualization of the initial human Mars settlement & round-trip voyage to the Red Planet - a sneak preview of just these 2 experiences (narrated in Spanish (close caption machine translate to English subtitles available) is currently available on YouTube at the 2 clips start-stop time code entries below, where the start time code is linked to begin playback from the start position value indicated (may not work on mobile, so manually advance the playback slider to the start time code provided below)

Origin of Space Program: The NASA Human Mission to Mars is the current culmination of the American Space Program, as originally inspired & visualized by World War II surrendered German V-2 rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun, who, in the early 1950's, published his vision for a human mars mission to Mars in his book "Das Marsprojekt" (EN), followed by his vision for a general space exploration program culminating in Mars settlement, in his highly illustrated 8-part article series for Collier's magazine titled "Man Will Conquer Space Soon!" (covers), followed by 3 animated episodes with Walt Disney that were broadcast on the Disneyland Television series episodes of Tomorrowland. The Collier's articles & Disney shows, coupled with, 2 months before the last episode of Tomorrowland, Russia's launch of Sputnik, caused American President Eisenhower to contact von Braun & Disney, resulting in Eisenhower's creating America's Space Program on the spot, by Eisenhower upgrading the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Rocket Plane development program, X-1 through X-15 (et al) to become the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) & later installing von Braun as "director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center [MSFC] and the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the superbooster that would propel Americans to the Moon" (MSFC); von Braun was present at NASA Mission Control during the historic Apollo 11 moon landing (photo). Further, the Collier's/Disney work helped launch the development of both the Russian & European space programs, as the work both prompted a call from Russia's L. Sedov ("Mr. Sputnik") requesting the Disney films to help inspire the formation of the Russian space effort, which occurred thereafter with Sedov becoming the 1st chairman of the USSR Space Exploration program, as well as a visit from Belgian cartoonist Hergé's Tintin "Studios Hergé" staff which resulted in the 2 Tintin Moon books/animations Destination & Explorers, inspiring & galvanizing the European public to form the European Space Agency (ESA Tintin photos: mission, staff, book, collectible, kids).
Collier's
(Note 1: An online sampler of the articles is available in Italian (& translated into English)
(Note 2: A member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Houston Section had, & donated, a complete set of the von Braun editions of the magazines to AIAA, who announced they'd high-resolution scan & reprint the entire 8 Collier's series in the back of 8 editions of their Horizons Newsletter, as well as make the 8 newsletters available for download as high resolutions PDFs (typically each 50-60MB). For a Space Exhibit project I'm involved with locally at the adjacent NASA Ames-Google Planetary Ventures HQ campuses spanning Silicon Valley's Moffett Field & Mountain View townships (article), I was able to extract all 8 von Braun articles from the AIAA Newsletters, combine them into a single "Collier's magazine like" PDF "All-In-One" document & upload the file to a Google Drive Public Folder where the file is suitable for downloading to computer hard drive/memory stick (& afterwards viewing, as well as printing, the latter often made simpler by dropping off the memory stick at a copy center for hi-res, double-side print & spiral bind)
