Additional Cardboard VR Experiences
YouTube 360 Video Channel
The Google Cardboard VR system, coupled with the Google YouTube 360 Video VR Mode library, offers a large collection of VR experiences across a wide range of activities. A sampler of some of the most compelling of these adventures is gathered below.
● Launching YouTube 360 VR Videos: Because the 360 Video VR Mode links below require viewing on a Smartphone stand-alone YouTube app through a Google Cardboard headset, viewing this document on a Smartphone is required; then, touching the 360 video links below will launch the 360 video directly into the Smartphone stand-alone YouTube app, at which point, once in the YouTube app, displaying in the 360° video controls area will be the Cardboard "VR Mode" control button (lower right corner "face-mask like" icon)
● Optimizing YouTube 360 VR Resolution: As mentioned earlier, resolution varies between near-HD to pre-digital broadcast TV depending on the SmartPhone screen resolution & that available/selected in the YouTube video, while focus may take a few moments to kick-in. Additionally there may be visible a "screen-door effect...a visual artifact of displays, where the fine lines separating pixels...become visible in the displayed image... an issue with virtual reality headsets...because these stretch a single display across a much wider field of view" -- Wiki. "image resolution is 'Auto (Selected)' & should look good & sharp - if not (the image is 'soft/fuzzy/blurry' like old broadcast television/VHS or early computer screen VGA), if the original source video was filmed at a higher resolution, the resolution setting can be bumped up, typically to a low HD setting of 720s, & still provide smooth continuous playback - however if set too high for a given system, for example > 1080s, the system may be overtaxed, resulting in freeze/stop-start jerky motion playback, & hence need the resolution set lower. To adjust the resolution, in the YouTube video screen upper right corner video controls area, select the rightmost vertical "three white dots" drop-down system menu (︙), & on the horizontal banner of controls that appear, select the leftmost "gear-shaped" icon (⚙) labeled "Quality", & on the pop-up list of available resolutions that appears, select the desired value"

● RecoVR: Mosul, a collective reconstruction..."In February 2015, Islamic State militants posted a video online showing the destruction of antiquities in and around the city of Mosul in Northern Iraq. For our first virtual reality project and 360° video, we have built a virtual museum to house those destroyed objects. This reconstruction of the Mosul Museum in Iraq was commissioned by The Economist Media Lab in association with Project Mosul [‘Project Mosul was founded...by...two archaeology PhD students who wondered whether it might be possible to crowdsource images and use them to reconstruct the destroyed items using a technique called photogrammetry.
