Varied – prior to Earth, education meant simply gathering what
knowledge he could from his parents as well as other adults in the
resistance cell. Beyond this, Kain has completed the equivalent of GED
courses on Earth, and attended a semester of Starfleet Academy before
he dropped out due to boredom. A stint as an enlisted officer with the
Marines followed – and lasted even less time before Kain decided it best
to strike out on his own.

Psych Profile:
Kain is a lean, hard-edged young man. While he is not one to frequent gyms or – when they are available – holodecks for fitness, he has been known to run when the time and environment allows. He has also been known to get into fights from time to time – most often from his own initiation, though a few times he is simply defending himself.
Despite appearance and general demeanor, Kain is a rather intelligent young man. He is a vocal and auditory learner, absorbing his world through sound and words – his words, spoken often and, at times, without a seeming end. The kindest observers might state that Kain is a very loquacious individual, and possessing of a wry sense of humor. Most of his acquaintances, however, are more inclined to shut him up – physically if necessary.
Born in the squalor of the Bajoran Occupation, Zayas Kai’anit came to existence in the back of a muddy shack within the Batal Labor Camp. His mother, Zayas Turia, hid his birth from the overseers – not a difficult task as the Cardassian Guards saw only a mass of living beings as long as the work was completed. For his first three years he learned to scavenge for food and bits of cloth, and trinkets as they could be found in hopes of trading for favors from the overseers.
Before his fourth birthday, a raid on the camp liberated many prisoners – including Turia and her son. The resistance cell responsible for the escape included Kain’s father, Haian Ferrin, For the next ten years Kain’s life would be split between running with the cell, and the occasional bouts of hiding with the other cell children. He managed to survive, but lost his father before the Federation came in to level the field and send the Cardassians back to their home-world. Widowed and unable to care for her child, Kain’s mother scrambled for a way to keep her son – eventually settling on a quick marriage to one of the Federation Officers now present. The man – CPO Thomas Ketterly – brought his new family back to Earth once his duty was complete.
Life on Earth was like nothing Kain had known in his short existence, and he soon found himself struggling to fit in. For a time he studied at home, taking in Terran culture on his free time, and before he was 16 he passed the GED requirements for Education.
His step-father, Thom, began taking Kain with him on supply runs when he noticed the boy had a talent for flying small craft. Thom hoped that the experience would allow him to bond with his new son, but he soon realized that there was a disconnect between the two of them that would likely never be over-come. He did what he could to direct the boy toward wise future choices, but it was soon clear that Kain would do whatever he saw fit with his life. By the time the young man found himself kicked out of Marine Basic Training – after giving up on the Academy – the gulf between them was too wide to bridge.
Officially on his own by age 19, Kain began a sporadic career of signing onto merchant vessels and traveling the universe. A capable pilot, he was plagued only by a restlessness that seemed to trail him wherever he went. Kain skipped around vessels, bailing from one and signing up on another on a whim – if he wasn’t out-right kicked off by the captain first for picking a fight. He did manage to secure a position as pilot and general handy-man on the SS Mantua for nearly three years; Kain would have stayed, but the captain decided it was time to retire and move on. From there, he found himself at a loss of where to go.
Most merchants were aware of his background and wanted nothing to do with him – and those who didn’t were soon to find out – which left him with precious few options. For that reason, he found himself applying to the Border Patrol.
(Starfleet Academy) A child of the Resistance, Kain displays a typical lack of spatial grounding. His entire life has been one struggle after another, move after move to keep ahead of the enemy; to translate this into a normal, stationary life has proven impossible. Signs of PTSD are visible, though for the time being Kain seems capable of living without medicinal assistance. He does, however, show a penchant toward addictive activities. Likely a reaction to his need for motion and progress.
