Character Background:
Psych Profile:
To work, she wears professional business skirt or pant suitings most days, as if she were going to court (although she adds more polish for actual court days). In her own time she wears more comfortable but well fitted clothing. Although she's older now and her features have faded, wrinkles collected, and hair grayed, she's in better overall health than much of her youth, since she's improved her diet and exercises, often by weight training with her own body and counter forces easily accessible to her. When on mission, she wears plain jumpsuits or fatigues. She's slightly above average in height compared to most Terran women, and often sports thick heels or platforms which add a few inches, enough to give the impression that she is tall.
A'Koja Dea has always been amicable, sensitive to others, and generally interested in building relationships with everyone in her life. To her, relationship is a valuable currency for getting things done, and an invaluable comfort and gift (sometimes the distinctions between friendship as currency and comfort get blurred). However, A'Koja seems more contemplative and cautious now, as if she were holding back, and although she makes friends, she falls short of any very close relationships, in fact, seemingly pushing away anyone who tries to come nearer.
She still loves a good party and on any planetside shore leave will seek out the night life for a well billed play, opera, or dance, or a club with a unique music set playing. Being used to the respect and privilege of her rank for so long, A'Koja does have some trouble with retirement of her commission. She responds fairly well to being “kissed up to” when not disingenuous.
She continues to keep up with RSE happenings and stay practiced in Rihannsu. A polyglot, She speaks several languages, Including Ferrengi, Rihannsu, Klingon and Bajoran (she reads and understands Bajoran better than she can speak it), and a smattering of other limited understandings of common phrases and useful words in many tongues. Her taste pallet is very broad and her tolerances for interesting cuisine are high, and she is able to dine on and enjoy just about anything that is remotely edible. She's a talented dancer, trained for different cultural ballroom dancing, but, being tone deaf, won't be caught dead singing anywhere outside of the shower.
Early Life:
Born a genetic deviant on her homeworld, and finding herself female on an entirely androgynous planet with no tolerance for gender, A'Koja escaped the planet of J'naii and the brainwashing for deviancy as a young teen, and, through a circuitous route via life in Ferengi space for a time, managed to enter the UFP and gain citizenship in the Federation.
Studies and Career:
To her it seemed as if a new life began, and she put the old world behind her as she eagerly learned about an outside galaxy she had never even heard about on her nearly isolationist planet. She was especially interested in customs and cultures, and studied extensively. In college she elected to take Political Science and traveled broadly whenever possible, eventually joining the Diplomatic Corps. She earned a Masters in Interstellar Law and was certified to practice. About this time she became fascinated with the Romulans in particular and opportunities arose during the Dominion War for her to accompany Diplomatic attachments to Romulus itself. The opportunity afforded her the ability to also use the experience as a dissertation for a Doctorate in Romulan Studies. It also exposed her to Starfleet,
and she chose a new career path as a Diplomatic Officer.
When an older station along the Romulan boarder in the Calder System started to gain more attention due to a dispute over historical remains (Suspected to be Proto Romulan civilization known as the Debrune) in it's solar system, A'Koja was reassigned especially for her niche knowledge and became the station's diplomatic officer. It was barely a few weeks, before the CO and many of the staff were lured into a trap in a dangerous local nebula and A'Koja was quickly promoted to CO. The station was besieged twice- by parasitical body snatching aliens, then by a type of werebeast. Already being of an archaic model, Starfleet elected to replace the station with a newer design, the first of its kind, an Ithaca class.
In the years following, A'Koja built respect and camaraderie with a new crew and they established a much firmer hold over the system. She learned from mistakes made and gained confidence in her leadership skills. They began to establish smaller stations in the system, in orbit of the planets and in the oceans of Lowell. Starfleet invested in the system often, as new discoveries were regularly being made. It completely caught the station by surprise when a passenger liner was destroyed entering the system. They found the terrorists behind it and the case seemed closed, but there were unanswered questions about the circumstances that Dea pursued with Starfleet. When they skirted or obfuscated the questions she felt frustrated and disenfranchised.
More recent life:
Her niece had escaped J'naii as she had, and the word was that things were much worse on her homeworld some decades after she had made her own way. A'Koja had left it behind her for so long, but now that her faith in Starfleet was damaged, she felt she couldn't stay any longer. She resigned her role as CO of Starbase 60, and left. Once again she felt as if she were leaving her home and starting a new life. Few heard from her for several years, until she showed up applying for a job with border patrol, in the role of Legal Officer. She is older now, trimmer, and while not unfriendly, she is not terribly close to the people she works with, not in the familial sense that she enjoyed on Starbase 60.
A'Koja Dea is amicable, sensitive to others, and generally interested in building relationships with everyone in her life. To her, relationship is both comfort and currency. A'Koja seems more contemplative now although no less her outgoing self. She still loves a good party and on any planetside shore leave will seek out the night life for a good play, an opera or dance, or a club with a good music set playing. She continues to keep up with RSE happenings and stay practiced in Rihannsu. Being used to the respect and privilege of her rank for so long, A'Koja does have some trouble with retirement of her commission. She's much more cautious about how she eats now, and spends much of her personal time exercising or playing active sports on holodecks or fitness rooms or just in her own quarters.
