The fourth destination on my teenage European trip was Italy. Likewise, ETEC 500: Research Methodologies in Education was my fourth UBC MET course. Italy was so much fun to explore and more new money (back in the 80’s). Rome, Venice, Florence, the culture, the food, the history, the architecture and artifacts, I can’t wait to go back! One of my fondest memories was eating a piece of authentic Italian pizza. Eating pizza hasn’t been the same since!
This was my first of two courses with Dr. Cliff Falk. His guidance and feedback were instrumental in the growth of my academic writing. I really didn’t know when or how this course would be applicable for me, all I knew is that it was one of the four required courses in the program so I had to take it. Analyzing research, reading annotated bibliographies, writing literature reviews and conducting and writing up mini-research examples were new and confusing to me. I spent many hours reading and re-reading the Gay, Mills & Airasian 2009 research textbook to figure it all out. Qualitative, quantitative, ethnographic? … research and … research - how to keep it all straight, I sure had my work cut out for me, especially while I was simultaneously taking two other courses (ETEC 531 and ETEC 565). Much to my surprise, I never knew how important learning how to write literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, research proposals and research papers in this course ETEC 500 last year would be for me until nearing the end of my journey almost seven months later.
Putting Theory to Practice - With so many changes being implemented in my school division, I was intrigued and curious about how to put my new found knowledge to work. I found out this past January (2011) that there was a ETEC 580 course that I could take as a personalized course but there were a few hoops to jump through including writing a proposal to Dr. Falk and finding a professor to supervise the case study project. I wrote the proposal, found a professor to supervise, Dr. Franc Feng, and was soon immersed in creating my own research project for my school division, something really authentic that district office personnel were excited about. I have consistently been referring to many resources form this course including: the APA guidelines, the feedback from my assignments (literature review, literature analysis and research proposal) and especially the Gay, Mills & Airasian (2009) text book as a resource for this ETEC 580 Case Study Project.
Artifacts
As we visited three cities in Italy, Rome, Venice & Florence, I have selected three artifacts from this course:
1. Rome – Article Critique #1 - Word Processors Improve Student Attitudes Towards
2. Venice – Article Critique #2 - Re-Examining Gender Differences in Technology
Access, Practices & Preferences
3. Florence – Literature Review - Does Technology Influence & Enhance High School
Math Learning and Academic Achievement?
