Distributed Learning
My Canadian adventure finds me at the University of Calgary (in Alberta) where I took the course: EDER 677 Distributed Learning concurrent with my first UBC MET course ETEC 511 in the fall of 2009. This Distributed Learning course was delivered as a blended approach: half online and half face-to-face. Our face-to-face classes would be held at the Old College in Olds (which is an hour closer than driving to the University of Calgary).
I found it very interesting taking my first two courses as they were delivered quite different. Our cohort would meet weekly, for the first eight weeks only, in person and the rest of the course work, meetings, collaboration and communication was online while my ETEC 511 MET course was completely all online. I learned to appreciate the advantages that the differences afforded. I enjoyed actually meeting my cohort EDER 677 L02 in person and meeting weekly for the first eight weeks. With this instant connection with people I think we all felt that we had an invested interest in helping each other succeed to create a knowledge building and collaborative community of practice (CoP). Online, I will admit, it took longer to create these bonds.
This Distributed Learning course introduced me to Elluminate and online collaboration and collaboration tools. At the same time I was being introduced to the same tools in ETEC 511 – the essential online collaboration tools: Google Docs, Skype and wikis! I have a reflection of my introduction and use of these tech tools in ETEC 511 – England.
I included this artifact as it was my very first collaborative paper and my first academic piece of work outside of the MET program while I was trying to formulate my Personal Philosophy of Education and Technology for my first MET - ETEC 511 class. This paper shows my skills at the beginning of my Masters Program and next term in 510, I would write a similar paper more specific to Math classrooms. In EDER 677 L02 I was introduced to some really great resources on online learning environments and many of the resources from this paper and this course have been useful in later MET courses and specifically in my 510 paper!
