Standard Aquatic Species, Profile Set & Aquatic Plants for
High School Envirothon Teams
Common names will be used for the North Carolina Envirothon competition.
Standard Aquatic Species
The following Aquatic Species profiles are to be studied by students every year.
Students must know:
ID essentials (picture or preserved specimen) AND
All elements of natural history
American Shad
Bluegill
Brook Trout
Crappie (White and Black Crappies)
Largemouth Bass

Aquatic Profile Set
In addition to the Standard Species, a rotating Aquatic Profile Set is to be studied by students every year.
Students must know:
ID essentials (picture or preserved specimen)
To Study in 2024-2025 (set will change annually)

The following Aquatic Plant profiles are to be studied by students every year.
Students must know:
ID essentials (picture or specimen)
Specific adaptations, location in the aquatic ecosystem and impact on the environment.
