Patriotic Cards with Better Designs

An Illustrated History of the Embroidered Silk Postcards is the standard reference book on embroidered silk postcards. It contains references to over 2600 different cards with over 270 illustrations. The section on Patriotic Cards lists 235 Better Patriotic Designs plus 261 cards with Flag Designs. The cards listed below are additional cards discovered since the book was published. The latest additions are shown in RED.

Patriotic cards form one of the largest sections of embroidered silk postcards available. They are mainly from the First World War period, but some also came from the Second World War. To ease viewing and simplify the section, it is divided into separate pages for cards with Better Designs and cards with Flag Designs. All the Better Designs are described in full on this page following the format established in my book.

There are many repeating themes on patriotic embroidered silk postcards with Better Designs, such as: the black cat for good luck, usually wearing a red, white and blue ribbon; the British bulldog that symbolises the pluck and determination of the British; the French cockerel, which is a patriotic symbol in France; the swallow, which is a symbol of hope and prosperity; the British Royal Coat of Arms; can-can girls with patriotic colours in their skirts; soldiers of different countries; field guns; trench and battlefield scenes; aircraft; battleships; and scenes of home. Allied flags and their colours are often incorporated into the designs, especially of butterflies, dragonflies, cockerels and peacocks. There are a few rare cards depicting Marianne, the French personification of patriotism that represents liberty.
