Dear Parents,
Below is an example of an approved Time-Out form. The purpose of a time-out is not a punishment but is a means of communication between the teachers and parents to inform you, the parent that your child has had a minor behavioral issue, in class, during lessons, on a particular day. It is also a means of giving the student time to reflect on this misbehavior and how it can affect not only his/her own learning but also the learning of others in class. Hopefully this will encourage the student to change this behavior without forcing the teacher to escalate a report to a much higher level where the student will then receive a more serious consequence for his/her actions.
We as teachers would ask each parent to support us in the maintenance of good order in class for both your child and the other children at school to be able to learn in a calm and non-distractive atmosphere. If your child receives a time-out you will receive a copy stapled to his/her diary and you will be able to use your own judgement on any further sanctions you may wish to impose. Time-outs will not affect grades or other academic issues but they may result in loss of some priviliges at school for a short period (depending on the behavioral issue). Time -outs will be given usually after a third warning but in some instances they may be immediate particularly if a safety issue is involved.
We as teachers are professionals and do not indulge in any kind of inappropriate victimization of our students therefore if your child receives a time-out you can be assured that it is given in their best interest and should be discussed with them or their teacher/tutor in a positive way and not as a debate to justify the time-out or to excuse/avoid it. With this aim we can together help your child become a better learner. Also you are in the best position to help stop misbehavior early, especially if your child is receiving multiple time-outs from more than one teacher then we can discuss all possible solutions before it escalates.
