You can now begin to RESEARCH your project, some topics for research could be: (there may be more)
1. What is a slideshow?
2. What is Powerpoint?
3. How do I create a slideshow using Powerpoint?
4. How can it help me to show 2011 to 7-8 year olds?
5. Where can I find out about giving a talk ? - Research methods of creating a slideshow talk
http://www.studyskills.soton.ac.uk/studytips/presentations.htm
6. What would be a possible solution using the software and computer
system in St Dominic´s?
7. What level of computing skills do I need to have?
8. How can I learn these skills?
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 2)
ACKNOWLEDGE all research that is taken from sources such as the internet, books, people you interview.
DISCUSS and ANALYSE your research. (do you agree with other people’s views) make your own comments on each piece of research you include in the project.
Decide on one Area of Interaction relevant to this project (see AOIs) and EXPLAIN why it is linked to this project.
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 3)
· Write a DESIGN SPECIFICATION by creating a list of the following:
1. What is ESSENTIAL for my project?
2. What is DESIRABLE for my project?
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 4)
Design a TEST to be used to discover if your Powerpoint Slideshow fits the Specification this can be a set of QUESTIONS used to find out if your database will meet all the essentials and desirables. Also say how you will use with the results of your test.
Below is a sample form created in `google docs´ to help you get started on your test design.
INVESTIGATE
Unit Question: How can I organise my ideas to present a message to a group of people?
Context or Scenario: You have been asked to present a talk on The Events of 2011 to a group of students from the Primary School at St Dominic's. You need to prepare a slide show using Microsoft Powerpoint as means of getting the message across to the students. You can include pictures, words or videos to help get the students interested in what happened during 2011.
Create a letter from the head of primary inviting you to give the talk and asking you as an expert Powerpoint to show it to it to 7-8 year old students. Some example questions you need to ask yourself could be:
1. Who will I be talking to?
2. What will I talk about?
3. Who has asked me to give the talk?
4. What is the best software to use?
5. Where do I find information on the subject?
6. How long should the talk last?
7. Where can I find good pictures?
8 What are the limits on this Project? ( Deadline, Computer system, skills)
Write a design brief based on this scenario this should EXPLAIN what you are going to create.
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 1)
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 5)
Use Lesson 6 to go over your INVESTIGATION, make any corrections and
EVALUATE YOUR PERFORMANCE IN THIS CRITERION
DESIGN
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 2)
State how the design you have chosen will link to the Area of Interaction and the Unit Question.
Look at the AOI you have chosen and see if it is a good match to what you are doing. Look at the Unit Question
and say if your Powerpoint will answer it.......... (Unit Question: How can I organise my ideas to present a message to a group of people?)
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 3)
Use Lesson 4 to go over your DESIGN, make any corrections and
EVALUATE YOUR PERFORMANCE IN THIS CRITERION
PLAN
Using Microsoft Word not Powerpoint to outline in words how many slides, time for each slide etc. Do Two Designs.
Give an example of the Template you want to use (copy and paste one from powerpoint into word)
Write in MS Word for each slide, what Picture you are going to show on it for your Powerpoint presentation.
Then what you are going to say about each slide. You don´t need to show any pictures yet just say what you would like to have in your pictures.
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 1)Choose one Design which matches your Specification best. (the specification is the Essentials in Investigation)
Look at each of your two designs and say which one you think is the best and matches all your essentials.
Say Why your choice fits the specification.
Make a list of all the reasons you think your chosen design is best.
Begin by producing a resource list - all the things needed for your project.
For example: These could be things like your computer, the software, the internet, help files, books/manuals, your diary, your teacher
and even your friends to help evaluate
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 1)
Create a step-by-step time related plan include resources from your list and an estimate of how long each step takes.
For example: Write down each major step in the creation of your product describe the step in detail and list what resources
you will need to perform the step. In order to begin Powerpoint you must first learn everything about the program you can do this by reading the manuals, watching a video or asking the teacher. Continue with all the steps you think you need and then add time estimates to each step. Check your diary to see how long you have to complete the project and which days you will be in school.
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 2)
Use a Gantt chart to show your plan which shows the steps with dates and time for each step.
Once you have listed all the steps you need to create a Gantt chart using MS Excel set out each step on the left side and show by colouring the boxes how long each step takes and the dates you will be doing them. This will give you an indication of what you should be doing during each day of create and will tell you if you are ahead of time, on time or behind.
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 3)
Evaluate the plan by deciding which parts you will need to spend more time on or those parts you may not understand and will need more information in order to complete them.
Finally look at your plan and decide which steps you need to concentrate on most. Say which steps you think will be the most difficult and therefore you will have to learn all about them first. Say if you think anyone else can follow your plan if it is clearly written and easily followed.
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 3)
Use Lesson 4 to go over your PLAN, make any corrections and
EVALUATE YOUR PERFORMANCE IN THIS CRITERION
Below is an example of a Plan Showing the type of things you need to include in your Plan
Step by Step Plan
Resources (first you will need a list of resources and explain each one)
A computer – to run the software and connect to the internet, also to write up my project and save it in the shared folder.
My Investigation – to use the information I have discovered and put it in my Powerpoint
My Design – I need to follow the design I have chosen.
My School Diary – to keep a check on my progress and when deadlines are due, also to know if any other activities will interfere with my I.T. work, such as an Activity day or school holiday.
My friends – help with the create as part of my group and to ask for their opinion in my test and with my evaluation.
THERE ARE MORE RESOURCES
Steps (write down each step and estimate a time for each one)
Step 1.
I need to learn the software program well in order to create my project. I will spend the first two lessons of create learning and making a practice Powerpoint Presentations using the following resources. The computer, the software, tutorial videos, my investigation of Powerpoint, my teacher, my friends and the online help. This step could take 160 minutes or two lessons.
(It is not necessary to say things like turn on the computer because it is obvious that the computer will be switched on if you are using it.)
An Example of a Gantt Chart
CREATE
Create your chosen design.
Follow your Plan and be sure to follow the specification.
Make any changes to your Specification that you may find don’t fit or can be improved.
Test your design to see if it is according to your specification.
Produce printouts of any pages you believe are important.
In CREATE you should follow the PLAN TIME TABLE that you have made in the steps of the GANTT CHART If you discover it is wrong you are allowed to change it and state why.
(ie a particular step took longer or shorter than planned).
EVALUATE
Ask a friend or friends to Act as a user and test your Slideshow and ask them your questionnaire (from the essentials in Investigate).
Did everything work properly?
Do you need Improvements?
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 1)
Evaluate each stage of the design cycle and suggest improvements or further work that may be needed.
What did you discover in relation to the Area of Interaction linked to your project?
Did you choose the correct area of interaction linked to your project?
Does the project answer the Unit Question? What did you discover in relation to the Unit Question?
Does your project help you to understand anything about Life, Society and the Environment?
What new things did you learn from doing this project?
(The above should be completed by the end of Lesson 2)
