Why is Bloom's Taxonomy important to us as teachers?
The zibda is that it helps us remain aware of the different types of thinking we want our students to do. Higher order thinking skills create opportunities to process learning in a deeper, more meaningful way. Remembering, for example, is a lower-order function, whereas evaluating and creating are higher-order thinking skills. Students are simply more engaged when using higher-order thinking skills.
Benjamin Bloom's contribution is a big one! He has helped teachers in a very important and practical way: He drew attention to the different categories of thinking and explained how they can be used in the classroom.
We should seek a variety of thinking skills when we plan our lessons and seek to have student use higher-order thinking skills for key parts of the lesson. Here is a great website called The Differentiator. This site shows you the actions students take when they are engaged in the different thinking processes.
Although Bloom made the original taxonomy, a former student of his made changes to it years later by adding 'Creating' as the highest thinking skill.
