This website was created to showcase the resources and work accumulated while completing CONT539: Teaching English Language Learners Part 1 through Queen's University.
After taking this course the first thing I have realized is the immense amount of factors ELL teachers need to consider. As a teacher we know that every student learns in a unique way, but this is also true for the way an ELL student learns English. Considering that an ELL student is learning English and their mainstream subjects has made me have a much great appreciation for the amount of hard work and dedication ELLs need in order to be successful. As well, there a number of strategies that teacher needs to put in place in order to support their ELL students. I have also realized that I was incorrectly making assumptions about whether students would be able to clearly understand my lessons, instructions, or assignments. This course has shown me that the way concepts or assignments are explained can hinder a student's achievement if it is not done correctly. Being clear and concise can be the difference between a student successfully completing a task or them not understanding what is being asked. I have also gained a greater understanding of the importance of being patient. ELL students are having to intake vast amounts of information about the English language on top of their other subjects. Learning how previous schooling, how much English they knew starting in your class, or how the grammar rules in their L1 differ from English can influence their English development has made me realize the significance of being patient.
I believe I have learned a number of ways to help encourage ELLs to participate in my Drama class. More importantly, I have also learned participation is not always required. Students are able to gain a significant amount of understanding from listening and observing. I have also learned how creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom can encourage participation in the class. When students feel like they can take risks and make mistakes in the classroom and they will not be made fun of, they will continue to push themselves. I want to make sure that I find the moments where I can celebrate my ELLs successes in order to encourage them to keep contributing to the class. Making sure all my students, including ELLs feel recognized when they have been successful will both encourage participation and creating a welcoming and safe classroom.
The role of every teacher to help students find something about which they are passionate about. Students need to care about what they are learning otherwise they will not want to continue their exploration of a subject. To engage ELL students when you may only teach them for one subject is a challenging task, but it is our role as educators to find and make the connections that will foster interest in all students. To reach every student it is important for a teacher to know their students. Understanding an ELL student's needs on an individual level will help create more concise and effective lessons for the entire class.
One of the most important roles a teacher has is ensuring students feel safe while at school. While at school, all students deserve to feel a sense of belonging, welcomeness, and security. An open and accepting school is crucial in not only an ELL student's well being, but their interest in education. More specifically, I will create a classroom where students are comfortable and safe. Everyone needs to be able to share their opinions in an environment that promotes equality and kindness. Understanding that students are individuals with unique opinions and personalities is essential in creating a class that every student will feel valued in.
