I've chosen this video by Jim Cummins as my fifth artifact. This video explains the significant role teachers have when it comes to an ELLs success and how important it is to empower students in our classrooms. I chose this video because there was a number of points that he made that really made me reconsider some aspects of teaching ELLs. One point, that I mentioned in my discussion post, was about what we communicate when ignore a students use of their first language (L1). While we know that punishing the use of L1 doesn't help, and only letting speak L1 won't provide them with an opportunity to develop their English skills, I hadn't considered the harm of not responding to the use of L1. Cummins argues that neglecting to respond can create a status difference between their L1 and English. This video is important for anyone working with ELLs because it speaks directly about a teacher's pedagogy and what they need to do in their class. Understanding the significance of empowering our students, especially ELLs, is highlighted in this video. Having the information presented to you in a way that makes teachers consider how their actions from Day 1 contribute to an ELLs success resonated with me and made me consider how I'll prepare for future classes,.
