Management Carol

Carol, who teaches a course in management to 200 students, presents a case study that she will use to assess student learning at different points in the semester: early, midterm, and late.

(Early) Carol asks students to select the best answer to a question she asks by using their clickers in class. Their responses will help her gauge how well her students understand the issues surrounding the case. She can use this early assessment to guide the class through a discussion on the topic.

(Midterm/ongoing) Carol asks her students to read through assigned articles related to the topics presented in the case and write brief (approx. 100 word responses) in their online journals to the following: "What are the main points presented in the article? How has this information shaped your understanding of the topic?" In class, she selects several responses to read aloud and uses them as points of discussion. Each peer reviews his/her classmates by using a peer review tool such as calibrated peer review (CPR).

(Late) She asks students to include one final entry (200 words) responding to the following: "Based on our case study of topic A, how does the use of application B influence the decisions made by management in determining the best solution to a problem? Use what you have learned from class discussions, reading material, and your journal entries to formulate your response."

*Journal entries need not be individually graded by this course instructor, though they would need to be checked for completion. Responses could be included in a portfolio developed over the course of a student's curriculum to demonstrate competencies in critical thinking in their discipline. Entries could also receive feedback and a grade in the learning management system.
