Calculus Robert

Robert, who teaches a calculus course to life science majors, uses a learning journal to help students understand and reinforce what they know and how they learned it. The journal prompts ask students to organize their responses in 1 of 3 categories:

  • Calculus concepts

  • Problem-solving abilities

  • Learning abilities

As students write in their journals, they explain how they approached the calculus problems and reflect on their own learning abilities, providing examples, "artifacts," including the problems solved as evidence of their learning abilities. Final deliverables include traditional notebooks/journals, slideshows, posters, or websites (whichever genre the individual student decides will best reflect his/her work).
