Geography Steve

Steve is an instructor for an upper-level course in geography. He reviews an important concept presented in the previous class meeting by asking students to write a brief paragraph on how they would define environmental justice. He passes out index cards on which students record their responses and gives them 10 minutes to write their responses. Last, he collects the cards and reads through them to assess how well they understood the concept and selects a few to read aloud to engage the students in a discussion of the term. Later in the semester, he asks students to write a paper on how communities of color and working-class communities bear a disproportionate impact due to major social, economic, and political processes. He asks students to consider how their definition of environmental justice has changed throughout the semester, noting how specific readings, discussions, and their their trip to the social justice organization have shaped their understanding of the term.
