Basic Front-and-back dc:
With knitting worsted and size H hook, ch 23.
Row 1-Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. 21 dc, including starting ch 3. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2-(WS) Sk 1st st, *
Yo hook from front to back, completely around to front:
Insert hook from back to front through the 2 loops in the next dc of the row below:
[Yo hook, draw up a loop, and through 2 loops on hook]2x.
This is a back-to-front dc [bdc]. Repeat from * across the row. Ch 3, turn. (Note- hold images up to a mirror for left-handed photos.)
Row 3-Sk 1st st, dc in each st across row.
Repeat rows 2-3 for pattern. Be sure you are inserting your hook through 2 loops of the stitch below, whether you are working front to back or back to front. Your work will look something like this:

Row 2-(WS) Sk 1st st, *yo hook from front to back, completely around to front, *insert hook from back to front through the 2 loops in the next dc of the row below. Yo hook, draw up a loop, yo hook, and through all 3 loops on hook. This is a back-to-front hdc [bhdc]. Repeat from * across the row. Ch 2, turn. See first 4 photos above for bdc. Last step for bhdc:
Row 3-Sk 1st st, hdc in each st across row.
Repeat rows 2-3 for pattern. Be sure you are inserting your hook through 2 loops of the stitch below, whether you are working front to back or back to front. Your work will look something like this:
