This is a new method of working crochet stitches: single, half, double, and double crochet, that opens new possibilities in crochet design. The basic front-and-back single crochet pattern gives you a right side that looks similar to knitted stockinette stitch, and allows the crocheter to design in color with greater definition. To learn basic front-and-back single crochet, start with the "Basic bsc intructions" and then go to the "2-color hearts tutorial".
Working with only one color and combining this new technique with traditional sc stitches results in exciting new stitch designs. Once you are familiar with the bsc stitch, go to the "Textured sc tutorial" to learn how to combine these stitches and to follow the graphs for textured sc.
Finally, back-to-front crochet can be used to make crochet that is worked in rows (and turned) look like round crochet (that has not been turned). This is especially useful when making a half-motif that is worked in rows to match a full motif that has been worked in rounds. See the "Taller Stitches Tutorial" for instructions on how to complete bdc and bhdc.
The half-motif on the left is worked in traditional dc while one on the right uses the new technique.
