Materials: Caron Simply Soft, 1 oz Chocolate (brown), 3 yards Grey Heather (grey), 2 oz Off-White (ivory), 1 oz bone Bone, 5 yards Black, 4 yards Sunshine (yellow). Crochet hook size H.
Gauge: Finished project is approximately 11 1/2" wide by 12 1/2" long.
Notes: Although there are 6 colors, all but 9 rows have only 2 colors per row.
This project was worked by a left-hander.
With brown, ch 48.
Row 1-Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 47 sc.
Rows 2-3-Continue in brown, following the graph and working the Basic Front-and-Back Sc.
Row 4- Bsc in 1st 19 st, changing color to grey in last lp as before, work color changes as per graph across to 6th st in grey, change color to brown in last lp, dropping grey, bsc in last 13 sts, ch 1, turn. [Note that you needed to read the graph from right to left for this WS row.]
Rows 5-6-Continue in Basic Front-and-Back Sc stitch. Cut off grey after last st worked on row 6. For the last st on row 6, complete the last lp with ivory and cut off the brown.
Rows 7-28-Continue in Basic Front-and-Back Sc stitch, joining bone as before and carrying it only across the body of the owl. Note that the WS of work has a color change every st for the owl body.
Row 29-Continue as before-adding grey in the center st. The grey can be a small piece of yarn, about 18” long.
Row 30-Wind 2 balls or bobbins with 2 ½ yds of black each for the eyes. If using balls of yarn secure with long pins and an earring back when not working with that color. Join the black to each side as shown on the graph. Work the black stitches in this and other rows with all other yarns behind as floaters.
Row 31-Wind 2 balls or bobbins with 2 yds of yellow each for the eyes. Join the yellow to each side as shown on the graph. Work the yellow stitches on this and other rows with all other yarns behind as floaters. End off the grey after the last st worked.
Back of work with balls
Rows 32-34-Continue to work in the basic front-and-back sc stitch with balls or bobbins, following the graph.
Row 35-Cut off a half-yard length of brown yarn and add it to the row as the center stitch. Continue to work as before.
Row 36-Continue in pattern. End off bone after first 2 stitches, and rejoin on other side. End off brown, yellow, and bone yarns after last stitches are worked.
Row 37-Cut off a 24” piece of brown for later use. Work in pattern, attaching ball of brown where indicated on the graph. Work over ivory yarn when working with the brown. End off black after last stitch worked.
Rows 38-39-Work in ivory and brown following the graph. Work over the ivory yarn when working with the brown.
Row 40-Work over the ivory yarn when working the first 4 brown stitches/ After working them, drop the yarn (do not cut) and work with the ivory only. Join the 24” piece of brown for the 2nd group of brown stitches. Work over the ivory yarn when working the 2nd group of brown stitches.
Row 41-Work over the ivory yarn when working each group of brown stitches. End off the brown after the last stitch in each group.
Rows 42-44- Work in ivory only, continuing in the basic front-and-back sc stitch.
Rows 45-50- Join a 2 ½ yard piece of the bone yarn where indicated on the graph. Work over the ivory yarn when working the bone, the ivory is worked by itself. End off the bone after the last st on row 50.
Rows 51-54-Work in the ivory in the basic front-and-back sc stitch. End off after row 54.
