Notes on John James

    • He was the son of Joseph James and Elizabeth Hosten.1 Joseph's full name was probably Joseph Austin James and arrived in Missouri from Maryland (by way of Kentucky and Illinois) by 1807.18
    • He was probably literate, because his estate included books such as Plutarch's Parallel Lives and "eight books on money".2
    • In 1821, he left on a trading expedition to New Mexico with his brother, Thomas.19

Notes on Julie Creely

    • She could not sign her name.2
    • She was still a widow in 1839 when she received her portion of her father's estate.20
    • She is listed twice in the 1870 census, once with her son Lewis (spelled "Louis" in the census) in St. Ferdinand Township, St. Louis, Missouri,21 and in Stony Creek, Tehama, California, with her daughter Levina (and next door to her son John B. James). Her California entry in the 1870 census incorrectly lists her birthplace as Virginia.22 She was living with her daughter Levina and next door to her son John B. James.
    • She was still living with her daughter Levina in the 1880 census.23
    • Cousin Annie in California sent me a photo of her grave in Glenn County, California. If you would like this photo, please email me at russwarne (at) gmail (dot) com.
    • Her father (Jean Baptiste Creely) supposedly opposed the marriage between Julie and John and the two eloped.24 However, this source gets some of the details about Julie's family wrong and I don't know how much stock to put into this story. After all, Jean Baptiste Creely still had her in his will when he died.20

7. Register of St. Ferdinand parish, Florissant, St. Louis, Missouri (christening record 1 November 1812). Oddly enough, the christening record lists the father as also being named "Henry James." This must be an error because the record specifically lists the mother as "Julie Créli" and that the child was born in wedlock.

16. For unknown reasons, she is not listed as an heir in her father's probate proceedings. The proceedings begin on 27 February 1834, so if her age in the 1850 census is wrong, she may not have been born yet, but that is purely conjecture on my part.
