Notes on Samuel D. Walton

    • Was the son of Joseph Walton and Anne ? [maiden name unknown].19
    • The death certificates of Mary Ann Katherine, Lucinda, and Peter all say that Samuel Walton was born in Missouri. This is incorrect. Census records from his lifetime say that he was born in Pennsylvania.
    • With his brother Charles, he ran the Walton House and Livery Stables in St. Louis, but their partnership dissolved by 1852. The hotel was large and in the 1850 census it held sixty guests.20 The partnership did not dissolve amicably, because they were in court in St. Louis County in both 1852 and 1854 to settle their disputes.21 Samuel also sued the estate of his brother-in-law, James Withinton, over a property dispute in 1845.22 All three cases made it to the Missouri State Supreme Court.
    • The hotel that he ran with his brother Charles was also called the Mansion House and was one of the "principal hotels in St. Louis".23 It was located on the southeast corner of Fourth and Locust in St. Louis.24
    • On 12 May 1857, he emancipated his 49-year-old slave, Silas Filer, in St. Louis.25 This is the only record of slave ownership that I can find for Samuel. He is not listed as a slave owner in either the 1850 or 1860 Federal Slave Schedules.
    • He was a brick mason in 1860.1
    • He bought 120 acres in Crawford County, Missouri on 1 March 1860 from the federal government.26
    • After Elizabeth Piant's death, he married a woman named Harriet and had two children with her, Eddie Walton and Sallie Walton.2

Paintings

Below are two paintings of Samuel D. Walton, Elizabeth Piant, Mary Ann Katherine Walton, and Louis Walton. Based on how old the children look, I would guess that the family was painted in about 1841 or 1842 (probably before Frederick P. Walton was born). These are the only pre-1850 depictions of any Creely descendants that I am aware of. The paintings today are in Crawford County, Missouri. Please do not copy them without permission. I can put you in contact with the Creely cousin who sent me the files if you wish to have a copy for yourself. Obviously, Samuel was well-off to have these painted.

Left painting: Samuel D. Walton and Mary Ann Katherine Walton. Right painting: Elizabeth Piant (Walton) and Louis Walton. Click on each painting to enlarge it.

But in the civil record (available in ancestry.com's Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 collection, clearly states that the two were married on 26 December 1833.

8. This death date is based on the paintings of his parents. George G. Walton is not in either painting, which is most likely because he had died by then. However, I have not found a death or burial record to confirm this. I feel confident enough in this assumption of George's death date, though, to list it here on this web site.
