• Was the son of Levi Smith.¹
• According to his granddaughter, when James and Mary Ann married, both families disowned them.
• In the 1850 Federal Census of District 82, St. Louis, Missouri, James lived with his father, Levi Smith. The Smiths lived next door to Peter Piant, Mary Ann Katherine's maternal grandfather. This probably led to the circumstances of their meeting and marriage.
• James and Mary Ann's granddaughter (born 1893) recalled in 1977 that they married when Mary Ann was about 15.
