The bursary is open to application from anyone but recipients must be members of the Cornish Buildings Group, if not already so. The Group welcomes applications in particular from students and those in early careers, although all applications will be carefully considered. Applicants will be intending to publish their research or to make it publicly available.
The research should be on an aspect of the architectural history of Cornwall, or a closely related subject. Topics associated with the conservation of the built environment where it directly applies to a Cornish craft, skill or building will also be considered. Please read our aims as fulfilling these will also be part of the assessment.
There is no deadline for applications, and they will be reviewed as they are received by the Group; it is therefore important that you state any deadlines you are working to in your application. The bursary must be used with the period of time stated to successful applicants.
The maximum that can be claimed is £350.
The bursary may cover research expenses incurred in visiting libraries, archives and historic sites with the United Kingdom, and associated costs such as purchasing photographic or reproduction permits. A contribution towards attendance at an appropriate conference may also be considered.
It will not be awarded for maintenance at home, purchase of books or equipment, secretarial help, or tuition fees.
If you are interested in applying for the bursary, please contact the CBG Secretary, Deborah Boden, to arrange an informal discussion. The Secretary will be your main point of contact throughout the process.
Your application should then be submitted electronically as PDF documents. It must include the following:
• title and brief summary of your research
• CV or summary of your experience and education
• your full contact details (address, phone number and email address)
• any personal websites or social media accounts where you might publish your progress or final research
• estimate and breakdown of costs
• date of start of project and estimated completion date
• one letter of recommendation to be sent directly to the Secretary (applicants are responsible for asking their referees to write).
Successful applicants will be notified by email, with the option of a follow-up telephone call or meeting if required.
The bursary will be paid in retrospect and not in advance. Claims should be made in a timely manner once the agreed expenditure has been made and must be supported by evidence of each item of expenditure.
A brief report of the use made of the bursary must be submitted to the Group within a year of its receipt. If the work extends beyond twelve months, a second report should be submitted on its completion. Brief accounts of the progress of the research may be requested for publication in the Group's Newsletter and on their website.
The financial support of the Cornish Buildings Group must be acknowledged in any published work arising out of the research supported by the bursary. Copies of books, or in the case of shorter publications, an offprint or photocopy, should be provided to the Group.
The Cornish Buildings Group reserve the right to publicise successful applications and any resulting activity and research at any time and by any means.
• The bursary is open to anyone resident in the United Kingdom.
