The CBG Awards are made each year for the best recently-completed or renovated buildings. These include private, commercial and public developments, renovations and small building or landscape improvements. The 'Oscars' of building awards in Cornwall, the CBG Awards are respected and desirable recognitions of achievement, with entries from private individuals and architectural practices.
The Group has made Awards each year since 1981 and during this period over 150 buildings have been recognised with an Award or a commendation. Examples of outstanding workmanship which have contributed significantly to the success of a building project are also sometimes commended.
Alongside a successful achievement of the aims and objectives of the client and their architect or designer, the Awards aim to celebrate work which demonstrates high quality sustainable design, Cornish distinctiveness, response to the building’s setting and, in the case of restoration and repair, sensitivity to the building’s original design and fabric,
Any project is eligible, whether a structure as small as a bus shelter, or a housing estate or a large public building. The deadline for entries is 31st March each year and any building which has been erected or restored in the preceding two years can be entered. Anybody can enter a building: owner, architect, builder or somebody unconnected with the building but who has recognised something special. Every year, the Awards organiser has a nail biting time in mid-March, when, typically, very few entries have been received, before a mad flurry of exciting projects arrives in the last few days of March, often with only hours to spare. The judging panel then has the hugely enjoyable task of reviewing the entries, shortlisting a manageable number which are then visited by the judges to enable a final selection of award winners. The awards conclude with a well-publicised ceremony, usually held at a previously-award winning building.
