The Maxwell Library Association was formed in 1885.
In 1901, a petition for a free public library was submitted to the council. The election was held March 25, 1901, and was favorable. The first library was above the bank. It was moved in July, 1939 to where City Hall is now. It was moved to various locations. On April 25, 1985, Connie Cory resigned as the Librarian. Dorothy Coughenour became the new Librarian on May 16, 1985. In 1987, the library was informed that it would have to move from it's location on the west side of Main Street due to the poor condition of the buildings on next to the library. The library moved to where the Medical Center is now located.
In 1992, City Council Member Chris Hand was instrumental in getting the City to remodel the Fire Station that was attached to City Hall into a Library. February 17, 1993, the City Council approved plans to remodel the fire house into a library. the work began at the end on April 1993. The library moved to their new location in July 1993. Total cost for the remodeling project was $66,226. Librarian Dorothy Coughenour resigned in July 1997. In September 2000, the library discussed hooking up to the internet with a dial-up connection. The Library Board approved the Library's Mission Statement, The Maxwell Public Library works toward providing educational and recreational materials for Maxwell and the surrounding area.
