Some Estate Properties

The Lodge, Cheswardine Hall

This property was built around the time of the marriage of Ralph Charles Donaldson-Hudson to Muriel Balfour which took place on the 27th July 1899 in London. The panels on either side of the first floor window contain the initials of RCD-H and M D-H

The Gardeners Cottage, Chipnall

This was occupied by the Gavin family until about 2002, but has since been abandoned and is no longer occupied. The property was built by Charles Donaldson-Hudson and is dated 1884 on the stone plaque. shown below is the original plan for the east elevationof the cottage and below is a copy of the plan of the whole cottafe. It is a great pity that this property has not been better cared for over the last twenty yrars as it is now effectively derelict..

Water Tower

This was built to serve the estate and accoring to the stone plaque bearing the initials of Ralph Charles Donaldson-Hudson and Muriel Donaldson-Hudson, it was completed in1903. The tower was taken over by firstly the Water Board of Market Drayton Rural District Council and then Severn Trent Water before being returned to the current owners of Cheswardine Hall about 10 - 15 years ago. The lower part of the tower was constructed as a  game store for the local shoot on the estate.  The water supply came from a deep bore and in 1948 it also supplied the reservoir of Drayton Rural District Council, the income from which in 1948 was £152.50. In the images below, the red circle shows the location of the gardener's cottage, whilst the blue circle shows the location of the water tower. Both of these buildings are curently on private property.

This picture show a view of the water tower, with the entrance to the game store at ground level and the entrance up the outside iron steps to the  working part of the water tower. The stone bearing the initials of Ralph Charles and Muriel Donaldson-Hudson is shown below.

The Stable Block

Shown below is a view of the Stable Block at the time of the sale by the Milk Marketing Board in 1982. Compared with the current day. Considerable changes have been made to the property since then including the the demolition of the building on the right hand side which obscurs Stable Cottage. The small building to the left of the Scots Pine tree in the middle of the picture used to house pump for the petrol tank used by the MMB vehicles - it has long since been demolished. The midden ,to the right of the right hand tree is still full of muck from the bulls at the artificial insemination centre and provided wonderful garden fertiliser.
