1911 Cheswardine Hall Census

Neither Ralph Charles Donaldson-Hudson nor Muriel, his wife were present at Cheswardine Hall when the census was taken on the 2nd April 1911, although three of their children were present. They were staying at the Flemings Hotel,  9 & 10 Half Moon Street, London at the time.

Flemings Hotel was opened as a lodging house at number 10 Half Moon Street, Mayfair in 1851. It has gradually grown over the years to include number 7 to 12 Half Moon Street as well as 41 and 42 Clarges Street to the rear of the property. At the time of the 1911 census there were 61 rooms in the premises, which was owned by Percy Charles Sanford, and his wife Edith Frances. Percy Charles Sanford was born in Clerkenwell, London on the 2nd September 1863 and was baptised on the 25th October 1863 in the parish of St George, Hanover Square, London. By the age of 26, he was already living in Half Moon Street, Mayfair, London prior to his marriage to Edith Frances Foster at St John the Evangelist, Goose Green, East Dulwich Road, Camberwell, Southwark, Surrey on the 28th September 1889. In the 1891 census he was recorded as being a hotel proprietor at 41 Clarges Street, Mayfair. In the 1921 census he was still recorded as being a hotel proprietor although by this time he was resident at The Limes, Matching Green, Harlow, Essex aged 57 years. He died at The Limes on the 7th July 1925 leaving an estate of £22,473 16s 1d equivalent to about £1,364,000 in 2022.
