Southern Challenge 2017

Over the weekend of 1/2 July, 13 members took up the GC Southern Challenge - a 2 day, 4-person level play event competing against teams from across the Southern region

After winning Division 2 at Surbiton last year, we were promoted to Division 1 ( at Southwick ) but also allowed a team for Div 2 at Surbiton.

Division 1 was a daunting prospect with established top-ranking clubs, internationals like Tobi Savage and Pierre Beaudry and many other players with negative handicaps - all played with no extra shots ! Cheam exceeded expectations in such illustrious company by winning 6 of our 12 matches ( including a storming finish in our last 3 ) to finish 6th out of 10 and well out of the "relegation zone". Our team was Ian Cobbold, Andrew Wilson, Brian Maddocks ( all both days ), Robert Cook (Sat) and Jean Cobbold ( Sun ). A photo of the high tech scorecard is shown below !

Division 2 proved a tougher challenge than last year but the team still won 4 matches and narrowly missed out on doing even better. Hopefully all enjoyed the excellent competition, camaraderie (... and no doubt food !) on offer. As so many members were keen to play , our Saturday and Sunday contingent were different. John Horne, Hazel Clarke, Colin Smith and Colin Myerscough led off on Saturday before handing the baton to Sue & Tony Nicholas and Ken and Beryl Hughes for the Sunday.

Congratulations to all our team members taking part and helping put Cheam CBC firmly on the croquet map
