About Us

Welcome to the website of the Cheam Croquet & Bowls Club.

You may already see all the menu items to the left of this screen.  If not , select the menu icon ( 3 parallel lines ) in the top left corner of this screen. That should then display the relevant options.

The club is situated in Cheam Recreation Ground, which adjoins Cheam Park and the historic Nonsuch Park which originates back in the Tudor times of Henry VIII.

The club opened in the spring of 2012, leasing what was previously a bowling green from Sutton Council. The lawn used today was originally laid in the 1930s and when the previous Cheam Village Bowling Club closed Sutton Council approached the Croquet Association ( now Croquet England ) to see if it was interested in starting a croquet club on the site. The lawn and buildings are maintained by the members of the club.

The number of members in the club fluctuates, but typically there are 65 members who primarily play croquet, 9 members who primarily play bowl and 12 Social members .

There are two versions of croquet, known as Golf Croquet and Association Croquet. Most members prefer Golf Croquet but the club has a small group of keen Association Croquet players.

The lawn is kept open for most of the  year for croquet, weather permitting. (It is normally closed from  mid-December until the end of February.) Bowls is played from April to September.

The club caters for all levels of croquet player. Some members are content to play social croquet during our club sessions but for those who want to play more competitively there are a variety of opportunities. A number of internal competitions are held each year as are friendly matches against other clubs. The club enters teams in the South East Croquet Federation's Golf Croquet Handicap League,  R League and its Association Croquet S League, as well as some of the Federation's team tournaments. Some members also enter external tournaments as individuals.

Bowls is currently only played socially.

The club holds a number of social events for members and their friends including a BBQ, and an Annual Dinner. When the club is closed for winter, various activities are organised.
