Grassroots Qualifier a Sundrenched Success

Post date: Jun 23, 2018 4:20:35 PM

Glorious sunshine and a tricky sunbaked lawn for the knockout stages of this year's Grassroots qualifier.

All four played well, and David Knill-Jones continued his all-conquering form from the group stages, breezing to a 7-3 semi final win over Philip Weatheritt. Liz Swinton edged out last year's winner Colin Helps in the other semi final with a killer first approach to the golden hoop.

In the final, Liz stormed to her first Cheam trophy, with an impressive 7-3 win over David.

Colin then defeated Phil 7-4 in the 3rd/4th place playoff.

With strong performances all round and all four keen to represent Cheam in the National final at Bath in September, we are hoping we will be granted an extra place or two to fly the flag there.

Both David and Colin achieved handicap cuts ( to 9 and 8 respectively ) over the course of the event.

Thanks to referee Jacky Waite for overseeing all three competition sessions ( happily no major controversial decisions required ) and to the other block stage competitors, Colin Smith ( who missed out on the semis by the narrowest possible margin of 1 hoop difference point ), Ben Bennett, John Richmond and Alison Edwards ( our super sub late replacement ).
