On Sunday 24th September, the 20 finalists in the Grassroots competition gathered in glorious sunshine at the Nottingham croquet club, blessed with 5+ excellent lawns. Cheam was represented strongly by Colin Helps, Colin Myerscough and Jacky Waite. Everyone was initially in a block of five, and each member of the block played each member of another block, in untimed games. Colin Helps won his block with 3 wins from five games. Colin Myerscough and Jacky Waite were in the same block and each scored 4 wins from five, together with another person. Unfortunately Jacky lost out on Hoop difference. Both Colins won their quarter finals in 40 minute games. Colin M lost his semi-final to come fourth overall, while Colin H proceeded to the final, against the only player not to have lost a game all day!! Colin played brilliantly but had to settle for being runner-up. ( The outright winner started the season at HC 12 and is now nearly HC 5!!) A thoroughly good day was had by all.
