GC R League Success

Cheam have won all 4 of our matches in the Golf Croquet R League this year.

This is only the second year we have felt able to field a strong enough team to enter this league, the highest level league we compete in - all level play best-of-3 games against low handicap opponents.

Last year we won 3 matches out of 4 and this year have gone one better, winning the lot.

We won't know for a while if that is enough to win the league as it is not all-play-all and there are two other teams in with a chance to match our 4 wins and even beat our impressive net games score. That stands at +14 as we beat both Surbiton and Dulwich by 5-2, Tunbridge Wells 4-3 and Littlehampton by an amazing 7-0 in pouring rain and driving wind on heavy undulating sloping lawns.

It is particular exciting that several players new to R League have entered the team this year and done so well - Beryl Hughes, Hazel Clarke and Colin Myerscough very successfully joining "old hands" Brian Maddocks, Robert Cook, Jean Cobbold, Tony Nicholas and John Horne in the squad.

We even survived losing our talisman anchor Andrew Wilson whose handicap is now too low even for this competition.

The club's GC strength in depth just keeps on growing and we now have a very strong and committed pool of players.

Thanks to Jacky for organising matches and to all who have taken a turn at captaining the side
