(1) Recommendations
We recommend you seek services from a licensed professional who offers evidence-based behavioral treatment of insomnia. This is known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). CBT-I has strong research support for its effectiveness, and no other form of psychotherapy has demonstrated this. CBT-I is a very specific form of therapy that is different than CBT for depression or anxiety. Many therapists have a basic understanding of CBT for depression and anxiety, but relatively few have training and experience with CBT-I. Therefore, it is critical that you ask therapists whether they actually offer CBT-I. One way to verify this is to ask them the following questions: "Do you have patients maintain a sleep diary? Do you sometimes use sleep restriction and stimulus control interventions?" If they say no or are confused by the question, we suggest you keep looking. If a provider is not in-network with your insurance, call your insurance company to ask if they offer out-of-network benefits.
(2) Referral databases
There are two international databases that list providers who have expertise in CBT-I. You can search these databases for a provider in your area. Providers on these databases in the state of Oregon are listed below.
